Philips scoops five Spark design awards for inspiring health and personal care products

Best of the Best prize goes to the Philips Sonicare AirFloss

November 27, 2012

Eindhoven, The Netherlands - Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) has picked up five accolades from the Spark:Product Awards, a US competition that looks for designs that find a way of "improving our life and the planet we live on". The jury gave a Best of the Best prize to the Philips Sonicare AirFloss which uses tiny, rapid bursts of air and water to remove plaque bacteria from teeth. The innovation, whose intuitive design and ergonomic shape have been a big hit with consumers, was one of only eight products to win the highest award — dubbed the Spark! — for design excellence.

Alongside the AirFloss, four other Philips products scooped awards. The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean electric toothbrush also won Silver for its elegant aesthetics and high-performance technology. A Silver prize went to Philips’ Fight Malnutrition project (part of the Philanthropy by Design Program), which aims to empower healthcare workers and families in developing countries to recognize the symptoms of malnutrition in young children. Bronze awards were handed out to the Philips Sparq, a mobile ultrasound system designed to make scanning and interpreting images at the point of care as simple as possible, and the comfortable, compact and easy to use Philips Avent manual breast pump.

"Our goal at Philips is to design ways to make people's lives happier and healthier, so we're delighted to have won these awards," says Sean Carney, Chief Design Officer for Philips. "The five products range from complex breakthrough innovations in health and personal care, to a simple but ingenious way to help fight malnutrition in developing countries. I think the insight, enthusiasm and skill of our designers shine through in all of them."

The winning designs will be part of a Spark exhibition taking place in China during Guangzhou Design Week from December 6 - 9, 2012. After this event, the show will move to San Francisco, California from January 17, 2013.
