- Initiative involved an approximate investment of MXN $33 million, eight months of research and six months of implementation
- New lighting system to reduce over 3,800 tons of CO2 equivalent to 5,633,800 KWh consumption per year
- Estimated 65% reduction in energy consumption due to lighting and 13% reduction overall
Mexico City — Philips Mexicana and Alsea, the leading operator of fast food, cafeterias and casual dining in Latin America, announced an unprecedented sustainability initiative in Mexico. Considering an approximate investment of MXN $33 million (approximately more than USD 2 million), eight months of research and six months of implementation, new Philips LED lighting technology has been deployed in more than 700 Alsea’s restaurants including Domino´s Pizza, Starbucks, Burger King, Chili´s, California Pizza Kitchen, P.F. Chang´s China Bistro, Pei Wei Asian Diner and Italianni´s. This technology has been exclusively designed according to the needs of each brand to benefit consumers and the environment.
Globally, lighting consumes 19% of all electricity and two-third use inefficient technologies that are developed before 1970. Public and private buildings around the world, account for 60% of all lighting. However, in the last 10 years, lighting is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, inspiring new applications, designs, products and creation forms.
Alejandro Paolini, General Manager at Philips Mexicana says: "We are honored to collaborate with Alsea in a sustainable project, since improving the quality of life through lighting is one of our most important goals. The new Philips LED technology will benefit employees and consumers of Alsea´s brands and the environment by reducing green footprint in more than 3,800 tons of CO2 per year.”
The project involved installation of more than 28,800 light bulbs with LED technology of which more than 20,880 Master LED lamps are replacing halogen and incandescent lamps, and more than 8,000 Fortimo LED systems are substituting fluorescent systems. The new Philips LED lighting technology has between 25,000 and 50,000 hours of life, reducing operating expenses by not having to constantly change the lamps.
Fabian Gosselin, Alsea´s General Manager said: “We are committed to the environment and efficient use of natural resources. We support sustainable initiatives that minimize the environmental impact generated by our operations. We found a strategic partner in Philips, which will help us to integrate this environmentally friendly lighting technology. This way, we will reach a 65% reduction in energy consumption for lighting and 13% overall, equivalent to more than 5,633,800 KWh per year.”
The LED lighting system was designed according to the needs of each restaurant. For example, in the case of Domino´s Pizza and Burger King, a uniform lighting was installed throughout the sales floors where the color temperature enables a safety and clean environment. At Starbucks, warm colors were used, creating environments of comfort and relaxation, and at PF Chang´s a discreet lighting was deployed accentuating the architecture of the restaurant.
The benefits of using efficient lighting are plentiful. For example, to reduce the electrical charge in energy-producing plants and decrease the investment in building new plants; to also provide quality lighting to improve wellbeing and productivity, and to allow cost savings and diminish the ecological footprint and climate change.
With the new LED lighting technology installed in more than 700 restaurants operated by Alsea, Philips Mexicana and Alsea join forces to support the environment, taking part of a sustainable global movement, while continuing to provide enriching experiences to consumers from all the group´s brands, and caring for the planet and lighting up moments.
