Cape Town, South AfricaM – Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) has arrived in Cape Town today, the final destination of the Cairo to Cape Town road show 2012. Following the kick-off in Cairo three months ago, Philips has travelled 12,000 kilometers across Africa, visiting seventeen cities in eleven countries. The main focus of this year’s road show was to increase awareness on how healthcare and lighting solutions can contribute to improving the quality of people’s lives in Africa.
During the road show Philips showcased local, relevant and affordable innovations. Engaging dialogues were established with customers, governments, NGOs and media on topics relating to key challenges facing Africa and how new innovations can address these: Mother and Child Care, Women’s Healthcare, energy efficient LED and solar lighting solutions. In addition, Philips also provided clinical education and training to more than 1,200 African healthcare professionals to help improve standards of care.

Supporting UN Millennium Development Goals : Mother & Child care
The Cairo to Cape Town road show displays Philips’ commitment to the healthcare of mothers and children, supporting the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5. These goals aim to reduce child mortality rates and improve maternal health. Across Africa, the lack of availability of trained and skilled healthcare professionals is still an ongoing challenge.
Philips uses the road show to deliver clinical education on baby resuscitation, fetal monitoring and clinical ultrasound and to train healthcare practitioners on how to accomplish safe childbirths and improve maternal and infant care. Over 1,200 healthcare practitioners received training during the current road show.
Cost effective and reliable illumination
More than 500 million Africans currently live without electricity. For people living near the equator, darkness falls around 7pm all year round, slowing down or completely stopping many vital activities. By highlighting the benefits of LED and solar lighting during the road show, Philips illustrated how its lighting solutions can address some of the key issues such as energy efficiency, climate change and resource scarcity that Africa is currently facing. These solutions also create opportunities such as an increase in productivity by extending the day with solar lighting. Philips illustrated how it’s new solar powered LED Street and Area lighting solutions offer cost effective and reliable illumination. In six cities Philips partnered with Right To Play in a soccer tournament, which took place under solar-powered LED floodlights.
Highlights of the Cairo to Cape Town road show 2012:
Working together with strategic partners in Egypt
On May 14th, Philips kicked-off the road show by announcing a partnership with the Supreme Council of Universities (SCU), under supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education in Egypt aimed to improve graduate education in the fourth largest economy in Africa. Under the agreement, Philips and the SCU will share their expertise and develop consolidated training courses and dedicated internship programs at the newly established Philips Lighting Academy and Philips Healthcare Academy, which will operate in cooperation with the Ain Shams University and the American University of Cairo (AUC).
A strategic think tank in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Health, Alexandria University and other local health partners was set up aiming to improve the state of maternal and infant health in Egypt.
A local orphanage in the Mokatam district of Cairo was the first to receive a solar powered LED lighting system for a soccer pitch. The Green Vision flexi light fittings with 6000lm white light LED packages is a solar powered lighting solution mounted on fixed poles which can be programmed to provide light whenever needed.
First time visit to Ghana: Opening of West African regional hub office in Accra
Philips announced it was establishing its first West African regional office in Accra which would be functional in the third quarter of 2012 to support local channel partners across the West African markets. The office will allow Philips to be closer to customers and key decision-makers, broaden its reach and expand the range of product offerings and customer services in the West African region.
In addition to providing clinical trainings, Philips also introduced its latest ultrasound and monitoring products, ClearVue and IntelliVue, specifically designed for caregivers across the wide variety of clinical environments in Ghana.
Ghana also became the first West African country to install Philips’ solar powered LED road and area lighting system. Philips demonstrated a new generation of cost effective outdoor lighting solutions powered by the sun, which had the potential to transform life in Ghana at an economic and social level, in ways which have never been possible before. A new solar powered LED lighting system was provided to the Accra Academy in Ghana to help stimulate sports activities in the evening.
Philips co-funded research leads to successful scanning of over 1,000 patients in Uganda
Philips provided eight ClearVue Ultrasound systems and extended its collaboration with local partner Imaging the World (ITW) in Uganda. A Philips co-funded ITW research tested the health impact of the use of special ultrasound volume imaging protocols by health personnel with basic training in ultrasound examinations. During a six month period antenatal visits and deliveries at rural Health Center III increased more than 50% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. So far, over one thousand patients have been scanned and data successfully stored on a remote PACS server as part of the image quality evaluation.
At a stakeholder reception to discuss the findings of the research, her Excellency Mrs. Janet Museveni, Honorable First Lady & Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Uganda held a compelling keynote speech on ‘Reaching the Millennium Development Goals: Progress and priorities towards maternal and child health in Uganda.’
Reliable and affordable technology for safer childbirths in Kenya; pilot for solar-powered LED street lighting in Nairobi
Philips in association with the Standard Group and Kenya Television Network (KTN) organized a panel discussion with leading experts on finding workable solutions to improving Mother and Child Care and reaching the MDG’s 4 and 5 in Kenya. In addition, Philips partnered with the Kenyan Women & Children’s Wellness Center of the James Jordan Foundation in organizing maternal screening programmes and tailor-made clinical training workshops on maternal and prenatal care in Nairobi and Eldoret.
Philips also announced the successful implementation of a recently awarded public tender to distribute Philips ClearVue ultrasound systems to sixty high volume Ministry of Medical Services (MoMS) district hospitals across the country. The Kadjiado District Hospital, predominantly visited by Maasai women, was one of the first recipient facilities where the use of ultrasound would enhance the ability to detect and manage maternal complications during pregnancy.
Studies demonstrate that a total of five per cent of global electricity consumption could be saved every year through a transition to efficient lighting, resulting in annual worldwide savings of over US $110 billion¹. A pilot by Philips and the Kenyan Urban Roads Authority to install solar-powered LED street lighting in Nairobi, was the first of its kind in East Africa. The pilot was launched on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN International Year of Sustainable Energy for All, 2012. The initiative aims to highlight the benefits of sustainable energy sources and alternatives to expensive, less efficient traditional lighting.
Facilitate remote and mobile diagnosis in South Africa; install 100 “light centers” across rural Africa
In Johannesburg, Philips continued its high-profile debate and discussion around Mother and Child Care by participating in a high-profile panel discussion on CNBC Africa on the Millennium Development Goals 4&5 for Africa.
In Cape Town, the final destination of the Cairo to Cape Town road show 2012, Philips in conjunction with the Tygerberg Academic Hospital, has initiated a clinical trial to create a blueprint of Emergency management obstetric care units (EmOC-units) in different levels of hospitals in South Africa and the African region. The main objective of the trial is to increase capacity to manage high risk pregnancies and complications in the Obstetric Critical Care Unit (OCCU). By improving treatment, hospitals will be able to discharge the critically ill patients earlier after they are stabilized and have received initial treatment. As such, the aim is to improve the turnover in the maternity department.
This clinical trial at Tygerberg Hospital is part of a larger “Quality Improvement” initiative from Philips and is the first of four programmes, focusing on the development of rural healthcare solutions throughout Africa. The overall project aims to provide infrastructure to facilitate remote and mobile diagnosis in Africa (with a specific focus on rural areas).
Philips also committed an investment of Euro 1.2 million (spread over three years) to a new initiative, which will see the installation of 100 “light centers” across rural Africa by 2015. These are areas of approx 1000m2, or the size of a small soccer pitch, which are lit using a new generation of highly efficient solar powered LED lighting. The idea is to create areas of light for rural communities which live without electricity thus effectively ‘extending the day’ and creating numerous opportunities for social and economic activities in the evening.
