For a more sustainable world, we aim to “close the materials loop” and use resources as efficiently as possible; over the years, products are and will be increasingly re-gained and re-used.

 

Dealing with electronic waste is a concern for industry and society. E-Waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams, so it is important that the materials loop is closed and that our products are reused, refurbished, or recycled safely and effectively. In order to mitigate environmental and health risks related to e-waste, Philips Lighting has established Collection & Recycling Service Organizations (CRSOs) in 22 EU member states in collaboration with industry partners. The CRSOs manage the collection of lamps and ensure that 85-90% of a lamp is recycled, thereby closing the materials loop and enabling re-use of valuable resources and materials.

 

Globally, Philips Lighting strives to further increase collection and recycling and to set up new systems in other parts of the world, educate countries on how to manage collection and recycling, and to lobby with local governments for enabling legislation.

With an ever growing population, we will only be able to preserve the earth if we manage to close the materials loop.

The essential enablers

The CRSOs are financed via a Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) fee which is paid by participants based on products put on the market (so called "pay-as-you-go" scheme). Via this collection and recycling model Philips aims to support the collection and reycling process from beginning to end.
Design

Products are increasingly being designed for safety during use as well as ease of disassembly and recyclability. With the current designs 85-90% of a lamp is recycled.
Collaboration

Philips established collective collection & recycling schemes together with industry partners, sharing responsibility of closing the materials loop. In addition Philips is part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) En.Lighten project, that focuses on achieving global efficient lighting through, for example, education and active lobbying.

The CRSOs are in charge of ensuring maximum collection & recycling. Through the establishment of local collective schemes Philips, together with industry partners, manages the collection and recycling.
