Delivering innovative
lighting solutions to
businesses and governments

I’ve seen first-hand what a massive difference light makes to those that don’t have access to it. Light can literally change lives, and I love that.”

As a National Key Account Manager with Philips Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, Florentina is focused on developing productive working relationships with businesses and governments across Asia and other key growth markets.

Leveraging those relationships to help deliver innovative lighting solutions is key to success in this role, but customer satisfaction is what really drives her. Being involved in a turnkey solution from the very start to final implementation allows her to see the fruits of her labour like nowhere else, and it’s that level of satisfaction that makes her feel like she is making the world a better place.

This is maybe best illustrated by her work on the remote village of Mukim Sukang, 300 miles from Brunei – a market serviced by Philips Singapore. The village is 100% off the energy grid, almost inaccessible by road and for all intents and purposes, in the middle of nowhere.

It was in this village that Florentina spearheaded the handover of solar powered street lights, provided by Philips as part of an ongoing corporate social responsibility initiative to improve the well-being of remote communities.

Prior to the installation of the new lights - an innovative system of standalone LED street lighting installed near key communal areas such as the village community hall, school, health clinic - the 130 or so community members would end their days when the sun went down. They were able to partially light their homes and run essential power from diesel generators; but this was expensive and dirty - and as a result productive work, study or even safe play for the children was effectively out of reach.

Working with a dedicated team, Florentina put together an event at the village to officially hand over the system; an event she describes as challenging to say the least. “In Brunei, you need to hand these types of initiatives over during an official event, but even getting basic food and drink to the site was difficult. The village was literally in the middle of the jungle, and I had to convince a small team of caterers to come with me in my own car.” Despite the challenges, however the event was a huge success, and the village was soon enjoying the safety and convenience provided by solar powered street lighting.

It’s this type of thing that makes Florentina feel like she is genuinely making a positive impact on people’s lives with light. “In the workplace, what keeps me excited and engaged at work is the people I work with. The collaborative team environment and support from my managers means that personal and career development opportunities are never far away”, she says. “But it’s the customer relationships I build on the outside, and the projects I get to work on that make me feel like I’m really making a difference. The more worthwhile the project, the bigger impact it has”.
