Lighting, beyond illumination

I’m Ricardo Gomez Wong and I work in Business Transformation out of our Lighting HQ in Somerset, NJ. In total I have been with Philips for over 9 years in several roles within Supply Chain & Procurement. I want to take this opportunity to share a bit of what I currently do in my Black Belt role. Some of you might be very familiar and others perhaps not so much. If I were to explain it in a single phrase, it would be “Methodological Problem Solver.”

The value a black belt brings to the table, is a very particular mindset; which is to solve problems by rooting out their causes. We do this by using a very robust and widely accepted methodology called DMAIC, which stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. Each represents a phase in the project’s life; the main purpose of the project is to achieve a process improvement. The process owner and a cross functional team work together and engage in appropriate stakeholder management, with the objective to have the proper level of involvement and support focused towards the improvement.

Presently, I have been involved in supporting BG Professional’s North American program, which touches the whole End2End professional luminaire value chain. The main purpose of this program is to increase our customer base, by addressing the main opportunity point – SERVICE!

The program which was kicked off end of Q1 is touching the entire customer experience, in order to achieve a lead time reduction for our ‘Made to Order’ products. My involvement has been in the customer facing work-streams like “Voice of Customer”, “Order Management + Technical Support” as well as down-stream subject “Supply Optimization”. This project has been a great experience. We focused from this commercial need and then translated it into an operational shift, which leads to a more satisfied customer.

What is definitely a constant in Business Transformation is the diverse and fast pace situations you are faced with. Our success is directly linked to our ability to embrace change. At Philips we embrace this in a positive light with the focus on continuous improvement, touching on a couple of key values in the organization. Business Transformation is all about encompassing the most valuable resource the company has – its people; while generating development opportunities, in order to ride the growth wave that comes with change.

Philips’ dedication to improving lives is reflected in our company, our innovations, and a commitment to our people. Philips employees change lives every day. Click here to learn more about how you can have a more meaningful career.
