Unique Opportunities as a Research Scientist

By Tamir Hegazy, Senior Research Scientist

I started working for Philips Lighting Research North America in 2015 – the first time for me to pursue a research career within a large industrial corporation. My role as Senior Scientist provides a great opportunity to apply my broad experience while simultaneously enjoying further opportunities for learning and growth. I get to pursue my entrepreneurial goals in a startup-like environment, backed by Philips’ long history of business excellence and innovation.

Meaningful innovations

My technical expertise includes Advanced Computing, Modern Industrial Automation, Autonomous Systems, Machine Vision, and Information Processing/Machine Learning. Taken together with the experience I’ve gained at some of the world’s top academic institutions and industrial corporations, this enables me to support the Research group’s aim to build bridges between academia and industry. At Philips Lighting, we work on challenging research questions, while contributing to product development, and delivering meaningful innovations to the marketplace.

My position offers me several degrees of freedom as a researcher: I can choose which subtopics to focus on for data analysis; I can decide on patents to be filed; I’m free to publish learned papers; and I can strike the right balance for me between technical contribution and business value propositions. I’m also given the opportunity to work towards the level of leadership I want to grow into – which is quite unique.

Personal interest

Throughout my study and career, I have found no better way to deliver lasting contributions than to focus on serving human needs. Coming to Philips Lighting, it was almost too good to be true to learn how human-centricity is an essential ingredient of our innovation culture. Innovation is also one of the aspects of my job that strongly motivates me; it’s rewarding and exciting to develop things that nobody else thought of before.

I also appreciate working with team members at all levels. It’s not only about training and teaching junior members of the team – it’s just as much the other way around! I find their energetic ideas stimulating, and I learn from them. In a word, I’m really happy with the dynamic nature of my career. I meet great people from inside and outside the company, I visit conferences and workshops, and I’m stimulated by both academia and industry. It’s an unmatchable experience.

Philips’ dedication to improving lives is reflected in our company, our innovations, and a commitment to our people. Philips Lighting employees change lives every day. Click here to learn more about how you can have a more meaningful career in Research at Philips Lighting.
