Our management

Philips Research is part of the Chief Technology Office within Philips. The Chief Technology Office plays a strong initiating and orchestrating role in innovation across businesses and markets and lead game-changing innovation that disrupts and crosses boundaries in health technology. It contains our R&D organization, as well as organizations dealing with Innovation Management, Startup engagement, Software excellence, Data Science and AI platforms.

Philips Research is headed by Henk van Houten:

Henk van Houten joined Philips Research in 1985, where he investigated quantum transport phenomena in semiconductor nanostructures – work awarded with the Royal Dutch Shell prize. From 1988 to 1989, Henk worked on blue semiconductor lasers at the Philips Research Laboratory in Briarcliff, New York. From 1991, he headed a number of research departments at Philips Research in Eindhoven, the highlight being the creation of the BluRay Disc standard together with Sony.

 

In 2002, Henk became Program Manager for Lighting, Devices and Microsystems. In 2005, he became Program Manager for Healthcare, with responsibility for a comprehensive global research program with applications in professional as well as consumer healthcare, and across developed and emerging markets. From 2005, he also became General Manager of the Research lab in Aachen, Germany. He was appointed as General Manager of Philips Research in 2010, combining his global responsibility for the Corporate Research labs with that of leading the Healthcare Program. In 2016, he became Chief Technology Officer of Royal Philips. In this role, he has global responsibility for a.o. Research, Innovation Services, Philips HealthWorks, Software Excellence, Data Science and AI.
