Building on the resulting competencies, Corporate Technologies today creates and licenses options and Intellectual Property (IP), provides Research & Development (R&D) services and incubates new businesses.

The Incubators

In line with its strategy, Philips has set up three corporate organizations specializing in incubating new businesses in the areas of Healthcare, Lifestyle and Technology. The charter of the Incubators is to identify new growth opportunities for Philips and to turn them into successful businesses. Unmet market needs are matched with a unique value proposition that can be sourced internally, building on Philips capabilities, or acquired externally (e.g. in the start-up community). Through this strategic building up of emerging business units, Philips creates early access to new fields of value creation.

Philips Research is a corporate research organization that creates breakthrough innovations and successive innovations to feed the established innovation leadership. More than 1,500 people around the globe create new options and Intellectual Property (IP) on a daily basis. The main laboratories of Philips Research are located in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, India and China. By adopting Open Innovation as a paradigm, Philips Research increases the joint innovation power of its partners and itself to bring more innovations more effectively to market faster.

Intellectual Property & Standards (IP&S)

Philips IP&S pro-actively pursues the creation of new Intellectual Property (IP) in strategic areas and supports their sustainable competitive development. IP&S thereby ensures the continued growth of the Philips IP portfolio and manages that portfolio, which by now consists of more than 60,000 patent rights, 26,000 trademarks, 15,000 design rights and 1,600 domain name registrations. By participating in the creation of new standards, IP&S also facilitates the market adoption of new innovations.
