Does your hairstyle match your facial hair?

file

Matching your hairstyle with your facial hair is an entirely personal decision, but some combos work better than others. Much like your fashion sense, grooming is an individual choice as to how you want to portray your image. However, we are here to give you a few helpful hints as to what combinations look best.

Proportion

Generally it looks best to keep both your hairstyle and facial hair in proportion with one another. For example if you have short hair on your head, you could look comically mismatched if you then had a long beard. Similarly, if you have long shaggy hair on your head, it is easier to pull off a slightly more unkempt look with your facial hair too. Essentially, match your facial hair and hairstyle as you would your clothes; you wouldn’t wear a suit jacket with board shorts now, would you? That just doesn’t make sense.

Suits you sir

It is also important to know what looks suit your face, whether facial and hairstyle. You want to use your look to accentuate your best features and you can also use it to hide those bits you don’t like quite so much. A little insight from our resident expert Dr. Allan Peterkin has suggestions for your facial grooming:

The first step in choosing the right beard or mustache style is determining your face shape and giving your facial features some thought. Make a note of the strength of your jawline, the prominence of your cheekbones, the size of your lips, and the volume of your cheeks. All of these can affect which facial hairstyles will complement your look and which will have a nasty, adverse effect. Most styles can be tailored to suit your face shape, but the more you consider these factors, the better the fit.*

In short, ensure that you have taken into account the shape of your face when deciding on your chosen look.

Experimentation

With this in mind, however, it doesn’t hurt to experiment with your options. If what appeals to you is a fully established beard and a shaved head then go for it - experiment and play around with your options. The Philips Multigroom offers a variety of grooming options for you to experiment with, so choosing your ideal look is easier than ever, as you don’t have to stick to just one look using one specific tool. With the Philips Multigroom you can have one style one week and completely change it up the next.

Your hair and facial hair give you individuality of style in the same way as your clothes, so you need to give them the same consideration and care.

Why is the match important? Trend versus anti-trend, match versus anti-match?
