Light up the dark

With an average of a mere six hours of daylight during the long winter, residents of Uppsala in Sweden spend months in seemingly endless darkness.

To evaluate the impact of light on quality of life, we have worked together with the City of Uppsala and our partner Bjerking to see how lighting innovation can help families be more active outdoors – even in the depths of the winter darkness.

An experience beyond the ordinary

An experience beyond the ordinary

We gave the award-winning Sweetgrass Productions a challenge: release the color and energy of Philips' unique Ambilight experience onto the great outdoors.

Together with a team of intrepid skiers, they ventured deep into the outback mountains of British Columbia and Alaska to realize their dream of nearly six years: to film backcountryskiing—at night and in Ultra HD—and to take it to the next level using color and light as their inspiration.

What they did there will blow your mind.

OLED – the future of lighting today

OLED the future of lighting today

For the first time in the history of lighting, consumers can enjoy an entirely new form of light. Measuring just 1.8 millimeters in thickness, Lumiblade OLED has its own characteristics that leave everything seen until now in the shadows. As soon as it is turned on, the entire surface of the OLED delivers pleasant, non-dazzling light at a quality that other light sources and systems cannot achieve.

With its Lumiblade OLEDs, Philips is changing the way we all experience light. OLEDs are nothing less than a revolution in light and the future holds even more fantastic possibilities in store for this flat light source.

Brazilian stadiums lit up for kick-off

Brazilian stadiums lit up for kick-off

The eyes of the world are about to focus on Brazil as the South American nation hosts one of the world’s greatest sporting events. And nine of the 12 tournament stadiums will use Philips lighting.

Eight façades, including Rio’s iconic Maracanã, will be illuminated with Philips LEDs, while five pitches have been equipped with floodlighting that simulates daylight to maximize the performance of players and officials. And the global TV audience of more than three billion will also benefit, as the lighting optimizes the experience for viewers at home, increasing the broadcasting quality of HD, 3D and super slo-mo replays.

Philips honored on Most Innovative Companies for 2014 list

Over the past 123 years, Philips has lit the world, brought music to the masses, and helped to revolutionize the healthcare industry, but we are still one of the freshest thinkers around.

That’s why Fast Company recognized Philips on its influential ‘50 Most Innovative Companies for 2014‘ list, as well as naming Philips in the top 10 of the Energy and Internet of Things subcategories.

“To win in such a fast-changing environment requires a new kind of business agility,” explains Fast Company editor Robert Safian. The listing was based on not only traditional markers but also "progressive, sustainable business models and an ethos of creativity".
