Around 2 billion adults – 30% of the world’s population – are overweight. For patients suffering from obesity, weight loss surgery – where part of the stomach is reduced - is a last resort. Unfortunately, up to 30% of patients regain a significant amount of weight within five years after the operation. Without making sustainable lifestyle changes, the effects of the operation will not last. What many people underestimate is that successfully changing behaviours and building healthy routines is not easy and is heavily influenced by the patient’s social context. Knowing these challenges, our team designed a holistic, digital care ecosystem aims to help patients and their families change deep-rooted habits at the right moments, to achieve the lasting results they hope for.

Developing explorative design interventions in the field of Data Enabled Design and implementing in an actual care path in a clinical trial is very rewarding and exciting. Co-creating our concepts and solutions with the hospital staff, the patients and their partners was crucial to create value. And I realize it’s important what we do: bringing a new perspective to healthcare. It’s also rewarding and fulfilling to see that that is appreciated in the clinical practice.
Jos-marien Jansen - Senior Design Researcher
It was after a weight loss surgery patient approached me after a presentation at a design venue to thank us for such a considered, respectful and needed project, that I knew this is good design. If we continue to seek for and evolve our solutions based on truly personal needs, we can transform how healthcare is delivered.
