A Small Glimpse into Life with CF in Five Feet Apart

Every once in a while, a movie is released that goes beyond the idea of simply providing entertainment. Some movies ignite compassion in their audiences, shed light on an underrepresented community, and highlight challenges that are too often overlooked. Five Feet Apart is one of those films.

Five Feet Apart is a love story centered around two teens who meet and fall for one another while in the hospital. Stella and Will are both living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a genetic disorder known to cause the lungs to produce excess mucus that results in blockages of the airways. Because of complications associated with the disease, the two are forced to remain six feet apart to prevent the spreading of potentially fatal infections, but agree to risk it all to gain another foot in the name of love. While Philips does not recommend that patients take risks against their physician’s guidance in real life, we were touched by the sentiment. Unlike traditional teen love stories, this film touches on the severe and sometimes life-threatening challenges that are involved with this serious disease while offering a unique perspective of two survivors and how they cope and strive daily to live their best lives.

Philips is often approached about contributing solutions to be featured in movies or TV shows and there are many factors that go in to the decision-making process. With Five Feet Apart, the decision to move ahead was an easy one. Philips had the opportunity to lend its technology to a film that sheds light on the lives of survivors. While the film is a love story at its core, it also focuses on portraying Stella and Will as important figures in their own care journeys, as the two to take control to improve their lives despite their diagnosis. Throughout the film, viewers notice the teens carrying Philips SimplyGo Mini portable oxygen concentrators on their shoulders.  As Philips smallest and lightest portable oxygen concentrator, SimplyGo Mini empowers patients who struggle with respiratory disorders to live their lives to the fullest without the constraints of burdensome equipment.

Philips is proud to align with a film that raises awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis community. Instead of focusing on the limitations that CF can bring, Stella and Will are focused on living their lives to the absolute fullest. The film’s theme is aligned with Philips’ mission to deliver and innovate solutions that improve lives – including helping people to sleep and breathe better.
