Expanding access to children’s heart care

Philips is working with the One World One Family Global Humanitarian Mission and the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital Fiji to expand access to specialized pediatric cardiac care across the Pacific. The partnership combines the Mission’s commitment to free life-saving care with Philips’ image-guided therapy technology and expertise – supporting a shared ambition to deliver better care to more people.

When founder Sri Madhusudan Sai first visited Fiji in 2015, he learned about the lack of pediatric heart care in the region. “There were no facilities for pediatric heart care in Fiji, and most of the children would die,” he recalls. That realization helped inspire the creation of a hospital dedicated to providing life-saving cardiac care to children free of charge.

First biplane pediatric cardiac cath lab of its kind in the Pacific region

The opening of a new pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory marks the next step. Equipped with Philips Azurion 7 image-guided therapy technology, it is the first biplane pediatric cardiac cath lab of its kind in the Pacific region. The facility enables advanced diagnostic and minimally invasive procedures to be performed locally, helping more children access timely care closer to home.

The program is now also expanding to adults, using the same cath lab to provide free cardiac care to patients who might otherwise be unable to access treatment because of its cost.

The collaboration reflects Philips’ purpose of improving people’s lives through meaningful innovation and its ambition to deliver better care for more people. It also shows how technology, clinical expertise and humanitarian partnerships can come together to expand access to care.

During a recent visit to Philips in the Netherlands, Bert van Meurs, Chief Business Leader Image-Guided Therapy at Philips, and Sri Madhusudan Sai discussed the impact in Fiji and how similar collaborations could help bring high-quality care to more people around the world.
