Name: Maria Zapata Ferrer
Position: Software Developer
Joined Philips: 2006
I work in Philips’ Digital Pathology team, and my main role is to develop the viewer software that allows digitized slides to be seen on a computer.
At the moment the majority of pathologists work using a microscope in a laboratory, and the processes they are required to go through to complete a diagnosis can be very time-intensive. What we are doing is developing a system that puts what they are analyzing onto a computer screen, which provides numerous benefits for both pathologists and patients.
To know that people around the world are being diagnosed with the aid of software I have coded is a pretty amazing feeling.
The work we are doing at Philips is changing the world as it is right now. We are pioneering the technology that is helping the medical profession to advance so doctors could diagnose more effectively and, ultimately, help people get the treatment they need exactly when they need it.
One of the great things about working here is that everyone knows what they are doing is making a significant difference. We are creating technology that will shape how medical experts work in the future, and that provides everyone with the motivation and desire to continue innovating.
Philips is a dynamic environment; the company is full of intelligent and inventive people, young and old, from all over the world. There is a culture here that encourages all employees to grow in different areas and to find the career path that fits them, which is just another example of Philips proving how much it truly values its staff.
