My name is Tao Yong, and I’ve been at Philips for three years. I’ve always been aware that our products can help make a positive difference to people’s lives, but ever since a Philips device was used to care for someone close to me, I’ve felt a renewed appreciation for the work we carry out.

During the Christmas period of 2015, my father suffered a heart attack, and had to undergo a major heart operation using a Philips device. That’s when it really hit me that the work I’m doing here can end up going full circle. Things I help to build can eventually end up saving the lives of the people that are closest to me.

I believe that I fully understand, both from a personal and professional perspective, the importance of what we’re doing. There will always be a patient connected to everything we do at Philips, it’s just on this occasion it happened to be my father.

We all want to see the products we create making a positive different to people’s lives

When I joined Philips the one thing that touched me a lot is that absolutely everyone is committed to the small details. Quality is obviously something all companies in the health tech space strive for, but here it’s different; there’s so much focus on every single element, and that’s incredibly reassuring when you’re putting your trust in a machine to take care of a vulnerable person.

Manufacturing top quality equipment and devices is obviously important to Philips, but it’s not until you’re relying on a Philips device to save the life of a family member that you truly appreciate how meticulous people have been all through the design and build process. There’s a lot of trust and respect here. Everyone knows that everyone else has earned their place at Philips; one individual’s role is just as essential as anyone else’s.

Innovation is a key word at Philips. You hear it all the time, and that’s because it’s so significant. If you work for Philips, then you’re here to try and push the company forward. We’re a huge team, but everyone is aiming for the same objectives. We all want to see the products we create making a positive different to people’s lives, and I’ve seen first-hand the benefits of our hard work.

I believe that I fully understand, both from a personal and professional perspective, the importance of what we’re doing

To bring the best healthcare experience to the customer, everybody in the chain needs to work together. Coming up with a good idea is only the beginning; R&D, manufacturing, services and design are just some of the teams that have to be on the same page to ensure a product gets to market successfully. It’s a lot of work, but it takes time to craft technology that will set a global standard, and that’s exactly what Philips does.
