Careers with Philips: From South Korea to Indonesia

Jiyeon Hong
The team at Philips seeks to improve lives of people in the work we do. At the same time, the company looks into the development of its people. For me, this overseas opportunity is one which I’d never imagined. It is an enriching experience for me!”

Can you tell us more about your role with Philips?

I started with Philips Korea in August 2013 as an Assistant Finance Controller for our consumer business and at that time, I did not expect that I would relocate to Indonesia. I have lived in South Korea all my life right up to my overseas assignment in Indonesia. I am currently the Finance Business Partner for our consumer business in Indonesia, based out of Jakarta.

Why did you join Philips?

For me, it was because Philips is a well-known global brand and my expectation was that one can probably work and collaborate with people globally.

What are your thoughts on your current role in Indonesia?

I have more responsibilities as a Business Partner now and in addition to that, it is a fast growing market. There are challenges and there is also an opportunity for me to learn how to work with people from different cultures. It is exciting nevertheless to be part of the growth and to see it for myself. That itself is rewarding.

What are your impressions so far working overseas in a country with a culture so different from your own?

As this is an internal transfer from Philips Korea to Philips Indonesia, there aren’t major differences work-wise.

When I was initially offered this assignment, I did have my concerns…that I would be living seven hours away from my home country and in a place where I have no acquaintances, family or friends. Additionally, a place of a different language.

That’s different from my view today. I’ve discovered that I like living and working in Indonesia, a lot more than I’d expected! The people, food and weather are wonderful! Living in Jakarta is refreshing. Everything here is new to me.

The opportunity has helped me with my own development. It stimulates me and broadens my view. I can see that I am now more adventurous and open to new experiences.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I like to work out, read, travel and hang out with friends in my free time.

I learnt how to swim not too long after I’d arrived in Indonesia. Learning to swim has been my goal for such a long time, but I did not get to learn in Korea due to various reasons, including weather and the four seasons.

To add, since Indonesia has a lot of must-travel places, I am taking the opportunity to travel and explore places in Indonesia.
