AkzoNobel, DSM, Google and Philips to purchase green energy from wind farm Bouwdokken

January 17, 2017

Amsterdam  – A consortium comprising AkzoNobel, DSM, and Google today announced another multi-year contract to purchase wind energy. Closely following the October 2016 announcement of a contract for the consortium to purchase renewable energy from Windpark Krammer, which is currently under construction in Zeeland, this new contract includes an agreement for the consortium to purchase all electricity generated by the Bouwdokken wind farm. The nine turbines in wind farm Bouwdokken, each of which has a generating capacity of 4.2 MW, are currently being installed on the ‘Neeltje Jans’ artificial island, where they are scheduled to come into service in the first quarter of 2018.

The Krammer and Bouwdokken wind farms have a total capacity in excess of 140 MW – sufficient to supply around 140,000 households. Speaking on behalf of the consortium, Marcel Galjee said, “With this new contract, we are taking the next big step towards a new way of generating energy for the Netherlands’ leading industries. It shows that we really are serious about promoting sustainability and creating a future without carbon emissions.”

As part of the Dutch Energy Agreement, the Netherlands is working towards a target of using 14% renewable energy by 2020. By 2050 the aim is to reduce carbon emissions in the Netherlands to almost zero. All four members of the consortium decided back in 2014 that they would look for opportunities to work together, with all of them incorporating a sustainable energy policy into their long-term strategies.
