Allowing patients to recover at home – with full confidence, and no extra effort on their side. Clinicians know a lot about patients when they are in hospital, but as soon as patients leave the door clinicians lose overview of their patient’s health. Despite being cleared to discharge, complications can still occur when patients go home – especially in the first few days. This is where Healthdot had a breakthrough in usability. Design stepped beyond the traditional areas of impact and utilized its usability research to make a radical change in technology, eliminating the hurdles altogether.
Healthdot is a wearable sensor for patients discharged from hospital that allows clinicians to look after them after discharge. It provides heart rate and respiration data that detects if the patient at home needs medical attention.
Although wearable sensors bring obvious benefits to both the patient and care provider, this can only work if patients can handle the technology and convalescing and elderly patients often struggle with electronic devices that require Bluetooth pairing, pin codes or charging.

Great usability is when something works so well you do not notice it at all. When you are recovering from surgery or an illness, you do not want any additional burden. You want to focus on your recovery without fussing with technology. Healthdot was designed keeping this in mind. Once applied, there is nothing you need to do. All touchpoints are kept as simple and usable as possible so medical staff can focus on taking care of their patients.

It was really exiting to go along the whole journey from interviewing stakeholders, creating a vision, make a prototype, do clinical testing, build a medical certified device and deliver this to the market, thereby enabling clinicians to provide better care for their patients.
