Philips is one of the leaders in medical technology patent filings at the European Patent Office (EPO). With 683 MedTech patent applications in 2022, Philips was the top European applicant in the MedTech category, and the runner-up worldwide, according to EPO's Patent Index 2022. In total, Philips filed 1,338 patent applications at EPO, making it one of the top 10 patent filers overall.

The company’s IP portfolio comprises 56,000 patent rights, 33,000 trademarks, 114,000 design rights, and 3,200 domain names.
EPO received a total of 193,460 patent applications in 2022, marking a new record. According to the EPO's Patent Index 2022, patent filings grew 2.5% last year, after an increase of 4.7% in 2021 that followed a small dip in 2020.
