Sparq Ultrasound

Pioneering for point-of-care

Sparq Ultrasound
In healthcare the use of ultrasound is changing. It’s being used for an increasing number of point-of-care applications and in a wider variety of situations.

Working together with Philips Ultrasound, the Philips Design team aimed to set a new standard for the ultrasound experience, designing a pioneering point-of-care ultrasound solution.

Their starting point? That existing mobile ultrasound systems could prove difficult to position for complex procedures and their complicated interfaces comprised too many features displayed in a confusing array of knobs and buttons. And because ultrasound is non-ionizing, inexpensive and patient friendly, it had moved outside the exclusive domain of radiologists. More clinicians were using it, often in tight spaces and under tight timelines so their solution needed to be intuitive, easy to use and compact.

The result is Philips Sparq, a compact, highly mobile and flexible ultrasound system that simplifies the process of scanning and interpreting images at the patient’s bedside.

With mobility a key requirement, the designers included a host of features to help make Sparq portable and improve usability - from transport to interface. Firstly, the ultrasound employs an articulating display arm that allows moving, rotating and tilting the screen. A ‘cable-catcher’ system tucks away cables, so they don’t get caught in the wheels and the complete unit’s flexible design makes it easy to maneuver and position the system in tight, busy environments, making it ideal for bedside scanning. With its light color and friendly form language, it was also designed to be less intimidating for patients too.

Among its major innovations though, Sparq features the Intuitive Dynamic Interface. The designers, together with the technology experts, completely rethought the ultrasound user’s experience. Typically, clinicians use control panels to manipulate images and change settings, but they rarely need all the features of an ultrasound at once. Emergency departments, for example, require different controls to those required by anesthesiology.

The Intuitive Dynamic Interface removes knobs and buttons from the control board, de-cluttering the device and streamlining the user experience. It introduces touch capabilities on a sealed, tempered glass panel that is easy to clean and facilitates disinfecting. More intelligent button clusters group together relate functionality for enhancing efficiency and ease of use.

“Sparq is part of a harmonized approach to presenting a consistent Philips Healthcare experience”

The control panel uses light as a guide to contextualize controls that support specific clinical tasks and personal preferences while the ultrasound’s one-touch Simplicity Mode presents only the ultrasound functions that are used most often.

And of course, Sparq is part of a harmonized approach to presenting a consistent Philips Healthcare experience to patients and professionals alike, improving both the product usability and strengthening loyalty and connection with the brand.

The design of the Sparq system incorporates all components of the Philips Healthcare Experience Identity, a means of standardizing key elements to create a consistently positive brand and product experience. This consistency and the familiarity it creates, helps to shorten learning curves and reduce complexity for clinicians who have to use several different machines during their work.
