Addressing unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions: supporting health and communities

Philips connects emissions compensating to projects that support human health and environmental sustainability – aligning climate action with its purpose.

Holding Hands

While reducing emissions remains the top priority in Philips’ climate strategy, the company recognizes that some greenhouse gas emissions cannot be fully eliminated today. To address this responsibly, those emissions that cannot be avoided are compensated through verified carbon credits, aligned with global standards to ensure that they represent real and additional climate benefits. This approach is widely referred to as carbon offsetting.

Philips compensates emissions equivalent to its operational footprint – including emissions from sites, business travel, and logistics – by financing carbon-reduction projects that not only cut CO₂ but also deliver social and environmental benefits for local communities, in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.

All projects are verified under Gold Standard or VCS carbon guidelines, ensuring rigorous measurement and transparency.

Current global impact projects include:

  • Providing safe drinking water to reduce disease and deforestation
  • Reforesting degraded areas to boost biodiversity
  • Protecting forests to promote sustainable businesses and water security
  • Expanding wind energy to create clean energy and jobs
  • Supporting clean cookstove programs to improve respiratory health and reduce fuel use

By investing in these projects, Philips helps reduce unavoidable emissions while delivering tangible benefits for people and the planet.
